Harlem Renaissance poet Angelina Weld Grimke was gay, but born into a mixed race pre-Emancipation dynasty, she put loyalty to her family before her own sexuality. “El Beso”, sung Sunday afternoon by two sopranos, depicts Grimke’s poignant unrequited love.

Kitty Brazelton's O Joy! premiered at Twin Cities choir Vocal Essence's 40th birthday, and has been heard on NPR's Performance Today. It incorporates her re-translation of Psalm 77:1-6 with medieval and pop vocal tinges.
