A motorcycle garage once. Now a rehearsal and occasional performance space run by ex-EP Ethan Woods. A very personal space because that’s where Essential Prayers Project was born.

We actually began in the old Briscoe. Here is Trevor’s band Anawan—the band I invited to help me make EP—playing in the old space.

Anawan performing at home in Ft. Briscoe: Ethan Woods (self-constructed effects board, vocals), Maia Friedman (vocals), Trevor Wilson (tiny keybd, vocals), Alice Tolan-Mee (bass, vocals) and Michael Chinworth (keys)

Here’s EP rehearsing at the old Briscoe. You can see some of the same faces.

Ethan says:

The space is called Ft. Briscoe, named after Trevor, Lauren, and my favorite detective from the original Law & Order series, played by Jerry Orbach (RIP!!!). The address is 65 Sackett St. About a 15 minute walk from the Carrol F/G stop and a 3 minute walk from the B61 bus.

The space was "founded" in 2014, when Trevor, Myself, and the ensemble Tigue (Matt Evans, Carson Moody, and Amy Garapic) decided to see if the landlord for the space, our now-pal Vinny, would rent this industrial storage space to a bunch of musicians as a practice space. We initially started in the smallest of the three storage facilities, and in 2015 moved to the larger space with five additional musicians, which is where we're at now!

Initially, the space was just an open garage, with only a roll-up gate to close up, so we built a wall and created a proper entrance sometime near the 4th of July in 2015, which incidentally marked the start of the space being a sometimes performance venue in addition to rehearsal studio.

Since then, I'd say the space puts on around 10 shows a year, often with core Ft. Briscoe musicians performing to support touring musicians. It has also had a few amazing dance parties for 4th of July and New Years.

In its time, it's been a creative space for NY-based bands such as Anawan, Alpenglow, Tigue, Ava Luna, Rokenri, Uni Ika Ai, and many many more…
